As its name implies, the Central Business District is located in the central area of the country and – given the size of the islands – is only a few minutes’ drive away from all other locations, including the capital city Valletta, the port and airport facilities. It is spread over an area of 800,000sqm and houses several manufacturing companies especially within sectors such as food and beverages, as well as electronics and components thereof. In recent years, retail outlets as well as financial and banking institutions have also proliferated in the area, making it one of the most important commercial and financial centres on the islands.
The Central Business District is located in Mrieħel, an area within the city of Birkirkara that is synonymous with the aqueduct built by the Order of the Knights of St John to transport water from the rural areas in the west of Malta to Valletta.
