First green wall at industrial estates complete

The first of the green walls being installed within the industrial estates in collaboration with Ambjent Malta has been completed in Kordin, with the installation of another two green walls at the Mosta Technopark and the Marsa industrial estate also nearing completion.

The initiative, which is a pilot project that will serve as a basis for the installation of more green walls in other industrial estates managed by INDIS Malta, is in line with the company’s strategic objectives aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability and the greening of industrial estates.

Indeed, the green walls do not only improve the visual aesthetics of the industrial estates, but more importantly enhance the living and working environment for those making use of the area.

Various scientific studies have shown that, on average, 1 square metre of green wall absorbs circa 2.3kg of CO2 from the air and produces 1.7kg of oxygen annually. When one considers that an average sized tree absorbs 20kg of carbon dioxide annually, the first three green walls together have a similar positive effect to planting 105 trees.

Moreover, they also help reduce pollutants and toxic particles from the air, decrease the heat island effect, increase sound insulation, and provide a habitat for biodiversity.

Almost 40,000 plants have been used for the three green walls, which are all covered by security systems including CCTV to serve as a deterrent against any theft and/or vandalism. The choice of plants not only seeks to create a visually appealing green wall, but also ensures that the particular conditions of the area are taken into consideration, including for example the amount of direct exposure to the sun and the other elements that the plants get.

INDIS Malta is working hard to ensure that the country has the industrial infrastructure required to meet existing and future demand for industrial space, thereby sustaining economic growth and the creation of wealth and employment opportunities.

At the same time, however, it is also making every effort to ensure that this is not done to the detriment of the environment and that sustainability becomes an integral part of all its projects, including through the incorporation of various green initiatives in recognition of the importance that the environment plays in our lives.
