Opportunities for specialisation in helicopter engineering, maintenance, and operations

Gulf Med Aviation Services will be investing further in training, equipment, and staff to meet its future challenges, particularly their efforts to place Malta on the map by establishing an Aircraft Maintenance Training Organisation.

The plans were announced during a visit to the company’s hangar within the Safi Aviation Park by the Hon. Minister for the Economy and Industry Silvio Schembri accompanied by INDIS Malta CEO Karl Azzopardi, which also served as an opportunity to view the company’s operations and discuss the challenges being faced within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as future opportunities.

Now in its fifth year of operations, Gulf Med Aviation Services provides a range of services based on rotary-wing aircraft such as helicopters, including maintenance services, aircraft management, air ambulance and emergency medical services, as well as offshore services for industries such as oil and gas.

Details were also given of projects that INDIS Malta will be implementing specifically to support the aviation industry, especially within the framework of the infrastructural investment programme announced in 2020. Such projects include a €5 million investment to upgrade one of the taxiways at the Malta International Airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft, as well as another €5 million investment in the development of a car park that will facilitate further growth of our aviation cluster.

On a longer term, INDIS Malta is also the main driver behind the Airport Zone Strategy Plan, which shall be seeking to develop current underutilised and dilapidated sites within and around the airport perimeter, as well as create high-quality and sustainable aviation-related clusters.
